Susan Stamper Tyree, 52, of Hazard passed away Thursday, September 26, 2019 at her residence.
She was born in Harlan, KY September 3, 1967 to the late Steve and Pat Stamper. She worked with her family in the founding of the Whitesburg Church of the Nazarene where she shared her God-given gifts playing the piano and singing praises. She shared her gifts at countless weddings, funerals, and special occasions.
A graduate of Whitesburg High School and Alice Lloyd College, Susan was an elementary educator in the Letcher County Public Schools for 27 years—most of that time at Letcher Elementary. She poured her heart into her students. If you were one of “her babies,” you never outgrew that title as she kept in touch with her former students and their families long after they left her classroom. She loved and cared deeply.
She is survived by one son: Josh (Whitney) Tyree of Mayking; two grandchildren: Grayson and Finnley Tyree; one sister: Lorrie Johnson of Corbin; one nephew: Eric Johnson; and a significant other: Trevor Barnett. Susan was preceded in death this year by both her parents.
Family and friends are invited for visitation Monday, September 30 at the Letcher Funeral Home Chapel from 6:00-9:00 pm.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 1 at the Letcher Funeral Home Chapel at 4:00 pm with Rev. Paul Crisp officiating. Burial will follow in the Sandlick Cemetery in Whitesburg, KY.
