Carol Dean Brown age 79 of Blackey, KY passed away at the Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center in Hazard, KY on Sunday, March 3, 2024 after a lengthy illness. She was born on June 8, 1944 in Cornettsville, Kentucky the daughter of William Goebel and Alicene (Halcomb) Fields. She was raised in Red Star and a 1961 graduate of Letcher High School.
She graduated from Cumberland College. She was a career educator beginning her career as an elementary school teacher, was a librarian at Letcher High School and the first librarian at the elementary and middle school library when it opened. The Letcher Elementary and Middle School library was recently named in her honor.
Carol is survived by her husband of 59 years, Phillip Brown; her sisters, Martha Wilson of Port Charlotte, Florida and Audrey (Sam) White of Loxley, Alabama; and a host of nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Ernestine (Fields)McIntyre.
Carol had a passion for shopping and spending time with family and friends, and her lifelong love for family was always evident. She loved spending her Friday nights at Campbell’s Branch listening to her favorite musicians and Bluegrass music, and visiting with friends. She was a long-time member of the Blackey Improvement Committee that sponsored Blackey Days, an event she looked forward to each year. She was a member of the Blackey Book Club.
Services for Carol Dean Brown will be Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at the Doermann Presbyterian Church in Blackey, KY. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with services beginning at 1:00. Burial will follow at the Caudill Cemetery at Red Star. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Campbells Branch Community Center.
