Dan Combs of Whitesburg passed away Sunday, April 24, 2022, at home after a brief period of declining health. He was born November 21, 1919, being 102 years, 5 months, and 3 days of age at the time of his passing.
A native of Letcher County, he was the son of the late John and Martha Reynolds Combs. He was a veteran of World War II, a former Manger of Elkhorn Jellico Coal Co., and a member of the Whitesburg Methodist Church since the 1950's.
Dan is survived by his wife Penny Ritter Combs, sons James Combs, Whitesburg, David Combs (Lisa) Lexington, daughter-in-law Renee Combs, Jacksboro, Tn., daughter Jill Messer (Boo) Greer, SC. His brother Henry Combs (Coetta) Richmond, Ky and his step-daughter, Susanne Baker (Alex), Tallahassee, Florida.
He has seven grandchildren, James Fickling (Christina) who lived with Dan and Peggy when young and was regarded as the fourth son. Reed Messer, Clay Messer, Mary Catherin Weber (Hunter), Madison Combs, Seaton Daniel Combs, and Dozier Combs. He was blessed with three great grandsons: Chase, Teague, and Easton Fickling.
Dan was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Peggy D. Combs, his daughter Camille Fickling and the recent passing of his son, Stephen Combs.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Gladys Lindholm, brothers: Hugh Combs, Sid Combs, and Bill Combs.
The family wants to thank Dr. Van Breeding for his excellent care of Dan, and to the care givers who supplied loving attention, concern, friendship and who became family to Dan.
Funeral: 12:00 O'clock Noon Thursday, April 28, 2022 at the Letcher Funeral Home Chapel with Tony Brown and Denver Pigman officiating. Visitation: 11:00 AM Thursday at the Letcher Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Green Acres Cemetery at Ermine, Kentucky.
