Edward Ison Obituary

Edward Curtis Ison, 75, of Hallie passed away Saturday, March 21, 2020, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Healthcare Center.  Edward was born to the late Ed and Martha Watts Ison on March 17, 1945. Surviving are 2 daughters: Brandi Dixon of London and Brittany Burns of Manchester; 1 sister: Mary Carolyn (Tony) Blair of Jeremiah; a host of grandchildren; a special niece: Andrea King, along with a host of nieces and nephews to mourn his passing.  Edward was preceded in death by 4 brothers: Bobby James, Lilly, Manus, and Wayne Ison.

Ed was a son, brother, uncle, father, and a friend.  He loved all of his family dearly. He had a generous heart.  For many years he lived with and cared for his mother as her health deteriorated.  He remained committed, along with his other siblings, to helping keep her in her own home as she wished until her death.

Ed experienced many trials and difficulties in his life.  He was an army veteran and served in Vietnam where he was wounded and earned a Purple Heart.  While in Vietnam, he was exposed to the defoliant Agent Orange. About 20 years ago, he lost an eye to melanoma because of his exposure to this chemical.

Ed experienced many other health challenges including the loss of a lung to cancer about 10 years ago and a more recent diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in the fall of 2019.  Despite his failing health, he continued to live independently until the last few weeks of his life. Even after the loss of his brothers and parents, he desired to stay close to his childhood home on Linefork, Kentucky.

Ed enjoyed UK sports and was a meticulous dresser.   He loved chocolate cake. He loved to get out each day, and he often drove to meet his sister, Mary, for lunch.

Those who were closest to Ed knew that he weathered many storms as he walked through this world.  In his last few days, he spoke of going on to be with his mother. He expressed to us that God had given him peace in his soul through the forgiveness of his sins that only salvation can bring.    We rest in the hope that he is now at peace, reunited with the Lord and his mountain family that he loved with his whole heart.
