Loretta Jean Cook, lovingly known as Jean and affectionately called “DoDo,” passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2025 at the age of 79. A beloved resident of Whitesburg, Kentucky, Jean was known for her kindness, generosity, and the deep love she had for her family and community.
Jean earned her nickname “DoDo” from her great-nephews, who struggled to say her name when they were little—and the name stayed, just as the love behind it did. She dedicated 33 years of service to the State Department, a career that reflected her strong work ethic and commitment to helping others.
A proud member of the Red Hat Society, Jean enjoyed fellowship, laughter, and friendship. She had a deep passion for genealogy, taking great joy in researching family history and preserving stories for future generations. One of the most meaningful roles of her life was caring for her parents during their senior years, a true testament to her selflessness and devotion.
Jean was preceded in death by her father, Arlie Cook; her mother, Edna Cook; and her nephew, Chad Gilliam. She is survived by her sister, Mary Gilliam, her two great-nephews, Justin Gilliam and Caleb Gilliam, her two great-great nephews, Cooper Gilliam, and Creed Gilliam, and great-great niece Aryanna Gilliam, whom she loved dearly.
Jean was a giving and well-loved member of the Whitesburg community, and her warmth touched many lives. She will be remembered for her generous spirit, her quiet strength, and the love she so freely gave. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
