Lewis Beckham Bates, 84, of Whitesburg passed away Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at the Cambridge Nursing Home in Lexington. Lewis was the son of the late Uriah and Connie Johnson Bates. Lewis was the widower of Betty Bates. Lewis was a coal miner and loved raising a garden and going on walks. He was of the Pentecostal faith. Surviving are 3 sons: Lewis Beckham "L.B." (Emma) Bates of Pound Virginia, John Charles (Amy) Bates of Appalachia, Virginia and David Alan (Aroma) Bates of Lexington Ky; 3 daughters: Kathy Henry of Kansas; Sheila "Sally" Bates of Lexington and Pamela Sue Bates Mays of Prestonsburg; 1 sister: Maxine Bates Quillen of Isom; 1 brother: Worley Bates of Colson; grandchildren: Christopher, Matt, Logan, Jason, Josh, Austin Sumner, Autumn Marcia Audrianna Sumner, Jacob Nathaniel Blake Sumner, Matthew Sean Bradley Hall, Katlynn Danielle Jones, Michael David Bates, Keiran Lee Mays, Cyrah LaShae Mays, Ceven Geisel Duncan, Mahala Nichole Sanders along with a host of great grandchildren family and friends to mourn his passing. Lewis was preceded in death by siblings: Josephine Slone, Eliza Combs, Elizabeth Hamilton, Lola Eldridge, Mabel Bates, Jacob Bates, Estil Bates, Joseph Bates and Samuel Bates. Visitation will be Thursday, July 25, 2024 at 6:00 P.M. at the Letcher Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral: 11:00 O'clock A.M. Friday, July 26, 2024 at the Letcher Funeral Home Chapel with Bruce Eldridge officiating. Burial will follow in the Bates Cemetery at Colson.
