Merlene Day Obituary

Merlene Davis Day, 81, of Roxana, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, August 15, at The Greg & Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center in Hazard, KY.  Merlene was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend to many. She was the daughter of the late Thurston and Maxie Whitaker Davis. She is survived by her husband of almost 62 years, Doyle Day, and twin daughters, Cecelia  Whitaker (George) and Amelia Fields, both of Roxana and one son Kevin Day (Wendy)of Whitesburg; daughter-in-law: Teresa Day.  Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, Travis Whitaker (Leighann) of Roxana, Christopher Whitaker (Brooke) of Whitesburg, Amanda Hall (Jason) of Hazard, Megan Perkins (Raymond) of Roxana, Victoria Day of Cornettsville, Larry “LKD” Day of Whitesburg and Rocky Day of Whitesburg. She also leaves behind 5 great-grandchildren, Drew and Isaiah Whitaker, Lilah and Emmie Perkins and Keira Isaac. 

 

Merlene is also survived by one brother, Tom Davis of Columbus, IN  and three sisters; Jowanda Day (Jim) Beavercreek, OH, Elaine Moore, Richmond, KY and Brenda Davis of Lexington, KY, and one sister-in-law, Oveta Davis of Scipio, IN. Also surviving is her beloved family dog, Lucy.

Merlene was preceded in death by a son, Tim Day, a son-in-law,Andy Fields, a brother, Jim Davis and sister-in-law, Donna Davis.

 

Merlene worked many years as a bookkeeper for several coal companies and retired from MCHC in 2003. She was a long time member of the Letcher County Historical and Genealogical Society.  She also was a very active member of the Pine Mountain Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.  Merlene was a faithful daughter since 2004 and served as Treasurer, Registrar and was committee chair of Genealogical Records and Lineage Research.

 

Visitation will be on Sunday, August 18, at the Letcher Funeral Home from 12PM-2PM.  Funeral services will begin at 2PM with burial to follow immediately in the Whitaker-Davis  Family Cemetery on Mill Branch.
