Virginia Haynes Obituary

Virginia Geraldine (Gerri) Smith Haynes went to her eternal home on January 4, 2021, where she was greeted by a host of angels. Gerri was the oldest daughter of ten children born to Hewey and Leona Ellis Smith. Gerri was born June 6, 1932 in Bellcraft, Ky. She was predeceased by her husband Charles Haynes, Jr., her parents, her brothers James, Herbert, and Denny, her sister Ruby June, and her grandson Christopher. Gerri is survived by her children Charles Edward (Eva) of Richmond, Ky., Jerry Wayne (Meshela) of Lexington, Ky., Christopher Lee of Woodstock, Ga., and Lettie Jane of Greenwood, SC; her grandsons Charles, Caleb, Jay, Johnathon, and Anthony and one granddaughter Autum Combs, seven great grandchildren, one great-great grandson; her siblings Hewey Edward, Ruthena Fugate, Margaret Longworth, Elizabeth Mackey, and Katherain; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Gerri was a registered nurse and an entrepreneur. Gerri achieved her LPN degree in 1966 from the Hazard School for Practical Nurses and her Registered Nurses’ degree in 1974 from the ARH School of Professional Nursing in Harlan, Ky. Her career included five decades of service in Appalachian Regional Healthcare hospitals, clinics, and home health services, Somerset Hospital, Mountain Comprehensive Health Corporation, and the Letcher Manor Nursing Facility. Gerri also operated a uniform shop and a ceramic shop in Whitesburg, Ky. Upon retirement, Gerri was active in the Whitesburg ARH Auxiliary and volunteered at the Letcher County Food Pantry. Gerri was a member of the First Baptist Church in Whitesburg, Ky.

The family wishes to express appreciation to all the physicians and staff at Whitesburg ARH, especially Rachel Breeding, Dr. Shane McDougal, and Virginia Day, Letcher Manor Nursing Facility, and her personal caregivers, including Melissa Campbell, Angel McMurl, and Crystal Collier.  A private graveside service will be held with a Celebration of Life ceremony to be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the ARH Virginia G. Haynes Nursing Scholarship Endowment Fund at Southeast Community and Technical College; 700 College Road; Cumberland, Ky. 40823. 

A Private Celebration of life will be held due to COVID-19
